Courvoisier VS is the house's authentic, joyous introduction to its collection: a cognac from Jarnac blended from Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie aged between three and seven years, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Courvoisier has been based in Jarnac, a town on the Charente river between Cognac and Angoulême, since 1828, in the same château originally purchased that year. It is one of the great cognac houses, associated with Napoleon Bonaparte since the early 19th century and, since 2019, the most awarded cognac house. Its signature style, Cognac in Blossom, draws on the life and history of the Maison and the Jarnac region to reveal an exuberant, floral cognac.
VS is meticulously blended to defy category conventions. The Bons Bois and Fins Bois are distilled without lees, bringing fruit notes of apple, pear and grapefruit to the front. Next, spring blossom bursts forth in the distinctive house style. Finally, Petite Champagne distilled with lees adds complexity and length, beautifully balanced with a fresh oaky finish.
Fruit-forward and clean with moderate oak, it is one of the most accessible ways into cognac, and it has earned 92 points from Wine Enthusiast and a Gold Medal at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Pair it with an aged Comté, whose roasted hazelnut, caramelized butter, plum and pepper notes match the cognac's floral, oaky character.
It is an excellent cocktail cognac, especially in citrus classics like the Sidecar and the cognac French 75, and just as good on ice.
