Crater Lake Estate Rye is a straight American rye whiskey grown, distilled and aged entirely at the distillery in Bend, Oregon, made from 100% rye and aged at least five years, bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV).
It begins with just 14 acres of legacy rye grain and lava rock-filtered water. Once each year, the 100% rye mash from a single season's harvest is distilled in single batches and then aged in Oregon's high desert, where the exceptionally clean air helps make a whiskey that strikes a beautiful balance between oak and grain.
"Estate" means everything is done on site in a single location: growing the grain, milling, distilling, ageing and bottling. Crater Lake Spirits, part of Bendistillery, has been producing fine spirits since 1996, well before the current craft boom.
Expect the bold spice of an all-rye mash, rounded by five years in oak.
A true taste of Oregon, it makes a fine gift for rye lovers and anyone who values grain-to-glass craft.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Rye whiskey made from 100% rye has no corn to soften it, so it shows the grain's full spice and herbal character.
A straight whiskey must be aged at least two years in new charred oak containers with nothing added but water; five years gives this rye a fuller oak influence.
Bend sits on the dry, high desert side of Oregon's Cascade Mountains, where warm days and cool nights drive the whiskey in and out of the oak.
