Del Maguey Arroqueño is a single village mezcal from Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, made from large semi-wild Arroqueño maguey and bottled at 49% ABV (98 proof).
Arroqueño magueys can take up to 18 years to mature. Del Maguey's partner family in Santa Catarina Minas roasts the piñas in a conical pit over hot rocks, buried with earth for three days, ferments them with nothing but airborne microbes for thirty days, then twice distils very slowly in ancient-style clay stills with bamboo tubing, the original, centuries-old Oaxacan hand-crafted way.
Arroqueño has notes of luscious melon on the palate, like cantaloupe, with a bit of baking chocolate in the background. It is very vegetal, reminiscent of fresh green beans, with a savoury medium to long finish.
The bright green bottle with its artist-designed label makes it a collectible gift.
Sip it slowly from a copita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
