Del Maguey Minero is a single village mezcal from Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, distilled in clay stills with bamboo tubing and bottled at 49% ABV.
One hour beyond the village of Chichicapa and through a mountain pass lies Santa Catarina Minas, a pueblo with an arid semi-tropical microclimate and great water. The palenqueros, Florencio Carlos Sarmiento and his sons Florencio Carlos Vasquez and Luis Carlos Vasquez, are true craftsmen, and their palenque is among the most well organised Del Maguey has seen, including a cistern to cool and recycle the water used in condensation.
The most unique facet of the village, and the source of Minero's fruitiness, is that the still is made of clay with bamboo tubing rather than the usual copper. The Espadín agave is naturally fermented and twice distilled.
Minero has a nose full of flower essence, vanilla and figs, with a burnt honey flavour and a bit of lemon. It is deep and warm, and sweet all the way to the finish, a treasured gift for mezcal lovers.
Sip it slowly from a copita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
