Del Maguey San Luis Del Rio is a single village mezcal made from Espadín agave by Paciano Cruz Nolasco and his family in the remote village of San Luis Del Rio, Oaxaca, bottled at 47% ABV.
Three hours south of Oaxaca on a two-lane highway towards the Gulf of Tehuantepec is the turnoff to San Luis Del Rio, followed by another two hours on a winding, rocky dirt road. The pueblo lies in a narrow, hot valley with steep slopes full of maguey Espadín, and the Rio Hormiga Colorada, the Red Ant River, flows through it. Above the fields of maguey, the mountaintops are scattered with cornfields.
The agaves are roasted in earthen pit ovens over hot rocks, fermented naturally with ambient microbes and distilled twice in copper stills.
San Luis Del Rio has a spicy, fruity and smoky nose with a high note of citrus. It is creamy, smooth and warming on the palate, with a clean finish. One of the original expressions of Del Maguey's Single Village series, it makes a fine gift for mezcal lovers.
Sip it slowly from a copita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
