Del Maguey Santo Domingo Albarradas is a single village espadín mezcal from the Mixe region south of Oaxaca, naturally fermented and twice distilled in wood-fired copper stills, bottled at 48% ABV.
Santo Domingo Albarradas sits high in the mountains bordering a lush cloud forest. The Mixe is a high-altitude tropical zone closely resembling parts of Hawaii, where tropical plants and fruits grow beside rushing mountain streams, cool grey mists blow through the valleys and pine trees grow nearby. The Morales Luis family makes this mezcal: the late head of the family, Espiridión, had been making mezcal since the 1950s and passed his skills on to his sons and daughters, Juan, Armando and Esther.
It has a high, light nose with lots of citrus overtones and a bit of roasted pear. The palate brings plenty of tropical fruit, spicy and woody, with salinity and a clean, dry finish.
A classic from the pioneering single village range, it makes a fine gift for mezcal lovers.
Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
