Del Maguey Vida de Muertos, life of the dead, is a special 45% ABV (90 proof) permanent edition of Vida, crafted in San Luis del Río, Oaxaca, by maestro mezcalero Paciano Cruz Nolasco.
It is inspired by the batches of mezcal distilled in autumn by the family of Paciano Cruz Nolasco and shared for the celebration of Día de los Muertos. Made from 100% Espadín agave grown for seven to eight years, it is a center-cut distillate, naturally fermented and double distilled in copper pot stills. Del Maguey, founded by Ron Cooper in 1995, was the first to bring single-village mezcal to the United States.
The nose brings tropical fruit and warming spice. The palate has a creamy texture layered with floral notes, green herbs and a hint of poblano pepper, and the finish is long and complex, lingering with spice, herbal nuance and floral depth, richer than the standard Vida.
The colorful Día de los Muertos label makes it a festive gift.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
