Desert Door Texas Sotol Gold is the distillery's original Texas sotol aged two years in charred virgin American white oak barrels and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
Sotol is both the name of the spirit and of the plant it is made from, a spiky desert succulent that, hundreds of years ago, was used by Indigenous people of the region for everything from tools and food to fermented drink. The sotol plant is not an agave but a distinct species, so Desert Door is not tequila. The founders first encountered it in the West Texas desert, and every plant is wild harvested on ranches across Texas rather than farmed, a more sustainable practice than monocropping that helps conserve land and water.
It is a true ranch-to-glass spirit: wild harvested, distilled, barrel aged and bottled in Texas, with no added sugars, artificial flavours or colours. Expect vanilla, caramel and oak with a custard-smooth finish.
A unique taste of the Texas landscape, it makes a memorable gift.
Enjoy it neat or in brown-spirit cocktails.
Sotol plants take many years to mature in the wild, and each one is harvested by hand, roasted, fermented and distilled to make the spirit.
Two years in charred virgin oak gives the bright, herbal sotol a warm, whiskey-like layer of vanilla and caramel, and at 100 proof it holds up well in stirred cocktails.
