Dewar's 12 Year Old is a double-aged blended Scotch whisky, rested again in first-fill bourbon casks after blending to amplify its sweet vanilla notes, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Dewar's traces its roots to 1846, when John Dewar founded his whisky-blending business in Perth, Scotland. His sons John Alexander and Tommy Dewar built it into a global name, and in 1898 the family opened the Aberfeldy distillery, whose honeyed, lightly fruity single malt is the heart of the blend. Dewar's has amassed more than a thousand awards, and the 12 Year Old won Double Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Double aging is a technique perfected by Dewar's founding Master Blender, A.J. Cameron: after the whiskies, each matured for at least 12 years, are blended, the married blend returns to oak casks for a second period of aging. In 2022, Master Blender Stephanie Macleod remastered the 12 Year Old, resting it in first-fill bourbon casks for added vanilla and toffee sweetness, and it was rebottled in clear glass.
Elegant, rich and wonderfully smooth, it shows dried fruit, citrus and vanilla, with honey, caramel and toffee and richer, fuller flavors and more rounded aromas from the extra years in oak.
Enjoy it neat, then explore it in an Original Highball or an herbaceous Aromatic Highball. It pairs well with aged Gouda, mixed nuts and bread pudding.
