Dictador 2 Masters Barton Straight Rye 1979/1982 is a rare collaboration between two master blenders: Hernán Parra of Dictador and Drew Mayville of the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Vintage Dictador rum distilled in 1979 and 1982 and aged for 36 years was finished in straight rye whiskey casks from Barton, then bottled at 45% ABV.
The 2 Masters series invites a master from another great spirits house to put their mark on Dictador's oldest rums. For the Barton editions, Dictador's 1979/1982 vintage was finished in casks from Barton 1792's warehouses, with separate releases for rye bourbon, wheated bourbon, a blend of three casks and this straight rye. The rye casks bring spice, pepper and charred oak to rum that already carries more than three decades of depth.
The result tastes like a meeting of Colombia and Kentucky. Dark fruit, buttery caramel and dark chocolate from the old rum meet cinnamon, clove and nutmeg from the rye wood, with a long, peppery finish of toffee and sugar cane. Each bottle comes in a black presentation box marked with the Barton seal and the thumbprints of the two masters, a symbol of the partnership behind it.
Dictador has made rum in Cartagena, Colombia, since 1913, and its vintage releases are among the most sought-after aged rums in the world. Released in 2019, the Barton 2 Masters bottlings were produced in small numbers and are rarely seen today.

How to Enjoy It
Serve it neat in a snifter or tulip glass and give it a few minutes to open: the oak and spice settle and the dark fruit comes forward. A drop of water is optional. It is a natural match for dark chocolate, crème brûlée or a full-bodied cigar. For a rum collector, or a bourbon and rye drinker curious about very old rum, it is a rare and memorable gift.
