Don Elias Reposado is a 100% agave tequila rested in oak barrels and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV), produced at NOM 1477 in Mexico.
Reposado is the first stage of rested and aged tequila. Resting in oak gives the spirit its golden hue, and the taste becomes a balance between the agave and wood flavors, while the barrels lend unique flavors from the spirit they held before.
Expect rich caramel and vanilla notes balanced by a hint of spice, with a smooth texture and a warm finish. On the nose it is fruity, with medium oak and light notes of cooked agave.
The sculpted decanter with its etched Don Elias script makes it an elegant gift.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
Reposado tequila must rest in oak for at least two months under Mexican rules, a short stay that keeps the agave in front.
Its golden color comes entirely from the time spent in the barrel.
A slow pour into a copita or snifter lets the caramel and cooked agave aromas open up.
