Don Fulano Añejo is a marriage of very old tequilas aged in French Limousin and Nevers oak casks that previously held wines, made from 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave in the highlands of Jalisco and bottled at 40% ABV.
Don Fulano is made by the Fonseca family at NOM 1146, a highland tequila house known for its estate agave and European-oak ageing philosophy, with no additives. Slowly cooked mature agave gives just the right touch of sweetness to complement the depth of the wine-seasoned French oak.
Rich aromas of baked banana, tropical citrus and dried harvest fruit lead to lavish spice of cardamom and allspice. It is dry on the palate, with honey, caramelised nuts and toasted coconut; sweet, creamy vanilla is balanced by mint and menthol, and dark chocolate and leather underlie a long finish.
A deep, elegant after-dinner añejo, it makes a fine gift.
Sip it neat to wrap up a nice dinner.
Añejo tequila is aged between one and three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres, long enough to add colour, sweetness and spice while keeping the character of the agave, which makes it a natural sipping tequila.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
