Doña Vega Espadín is a joven mezcal artesanal made from 100% espadín agave by a family-run distillery in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).

Doña Vega is made in Santiago Matatlán, the self-proclaimed world capital of mezcal, by a family distillery that cooks its agave the traditional way. The bold red-and-black label makes it one of the most eye-catching mezcals on the shelf.

The espadín agaves are cooked in an underground pit oven, which gives the spirit its smoky depth, then fermented and distilled in copper pots. It is bottled unaged as a joven, so the agave and the roast speak clearly, and it carries the Denominación de Origen for mezcal.

Expect roasted agave and gentle smoke on the nose, a palate of sweet cooked agave, citrus and black pepper with an earthy, mineral edge, and a warm, smoky finish.

Doña Vega Espadín is a great mezcal for sipping and mixing. Sip it slowly from a copita with orange slices and sal de gusano, or use it to give a Margarita, a Paloma or a Negroni a smoky twist. It makes a superb Oaxacan Old Fashioned with reposado tequila and agave syrup, and a Mezcal Mule with ginger beer and lime. Pair it with tacos al pastor, mole, grilled chorizo, tlayudas or dark chocolate. The striking label makes it a fun gift for agave enthusiasts and anyone curious to explore mezcal from Oaxaca.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
