Dos Maderas Luxus is a double-aged rum from Williams & Humbert in Jerez, Spain. Rums from Barbados and Guyana are aged for 10 years in the Caribbean, then shipped to Jerez and aged for a further 5 years in casks that held Don Guido, a Pedro Ximénez sherry more than 20 years old. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
The two Caribbean rums bring complementary character: Barbados adds sweetness and Guyana a fuller body. Williams & Humbert, one of Jerez's great sherry bodegas, then finishes them in its prized old PX casks, which give Luxus its deep mahogany colour and rich, dessert-like depth. The name Dos Maderas, two woods, refers to this double ageing.
The nose brings vanilla, toasted almond, tobacco, black tea, dried fig and toffee, with milk chocolate and a hint of orange. On the palate come dark chocolate, roasted nuts, figs, raisins and spiced oak, and the finish is long and velvety, with crème caramel, soft tobacco and prunes.
The rounded decanter with its sea-turtle emblem comes in a burgundy gift box, a superb gift for rum and sherry lovers.
Sip it neat from a tulip glass.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
