Dos Pasiones Espadín is a single-estate mezcal artesanal from Santa María Albarradas, Oaxaca, made by the Martínez family and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).

The family has made mezcal in Santa María Albarradas, a village of fewer than 700 people, since 1943, when Epigmenio Martínez Pérez began distilling. He provided for his wife and six children with his two passions, music and mezcal, which gave the brand its name, and today his sons Diego, the maestro mezcalero, and Edgar carry on the tradition in small batches. The countryside behind the village is a forested mountain full of natural springs, where the family cultivates its Espadín and harvests it after seven to eight years.

The agave is roasted in an in-ground, stone-lined pit, crushed by tahona and fermented in the open air in wooden vats, then distilled artisanally. Santa María's mineral-rich soil and natural spring water give the mezcal its character: it smells of papaya, leather and roasted fruit, and the palate is lively, with grapefruit skin and black pepper on a long, energetic finish.

Excellent for elevated cocktails or sipping, it makes a fine gift.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
