Dram Hunters Strathmill 15 Year Old is a single cask Speyside single malt from the Rare Cask Series, distilled in October 2006 and bottled in August 2022 from a refill bourbon hogshead. Bottled at cask strength, 55.9% ABV, it was a US exclusive of just 243 bottles.
Dram Hunters is an independent bottler founded by Raj Sabharwal and two friends, brought to the US by 359 Spirit Purveyors. Strathmill, in the town of Keith, began life as a corn mill and has distilled whisky since 1891; its spirit goes mostly into blends, so single casks like this one are a rare treat.
Whisky Advocate scored it 92, calling it intensely aromatic, with fruit candies, ground black pepper, pear, peeled apple, vanilla, hay bales, lemon zest, sweet apple and barley sugar. The citrus and spice build to a peak of clove and oak spice, turning creamier, with baked orange, and it is very drinkable at cask strength.
The squat decanter with its old-world Dram Hunters label makes it a handsome gift for collectors of independent bottlings.
