Dry Fly Straight Triticale is the first whiskey of its kind, distilled from triticale, a single grain developed in Scotland in the late 1800s as a hybrid of wheat and rye, and aged three years in new 53-gallon American oak.
Dry Fly Distilling, founded in Spokane, Washington, in 2007 by two friends inspired while fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest, is a farm-to-bottle producer that makes every drop from raw materials grown locally by sustainable farms and never buys bulk alcohol. The Triticale combines rye's peppery boldness with the subtle refinement and soft body of wheat, making it one of the most distinctive American whiskeys in production.
Amber in the glass, it shows white pepper and stone fruit on the nose with caramel, ripe red apple and peanut. The palate brings wheat bread, coffee-cedar, bright tangerine and new leather, finishing round and soft with lingering spice.
The fly-fishing label makes it a unique gift for Northwest whiskey fans.
Straight whiskey must age at least two years in new charred oak.
Triticale yields the bread-like body of wheat with rye's spice.
A splash of water opens up the stone fruit.
It pairs with smoked salmon, roasted nuts or aged cheddar.
It is a conversation-starting gift for whiskey explorers.
