Du Nord Prominence Gin is a deeply juniper-forward gin from Du Nord Social Spirits in Minneapolis, a remix of classic London Dry and old-world gin for the bold of tongue, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Du Nord is the brainchild of Chris Montana, who opened the distillery in his home city of Minneapolis in 2013. It runs a cocktail room on the premises, and sales of its spirits have supported the Du Nord Foundation; the distillery's motto is real good booze that does real good. Alongside Prominence, the lineup includes Foundation Vodka, Mixed Blood Whiskey, Café Frieda coffee liqueur, Pronounced Apple Liqueur and a limited Prominence Barreled Gin aged in whiskey casks. The team describes itself as gin-obsessed, and a borderline-unhealthy amount of research and experimentation went into Prominence.
Juniper believers, line up. The heart of the gin is an Italian juniper that hits all the right notes, chosen after the team fell in love with it, then softened and elevated by roots and citrus. The result is as outspoken, unique and deeply charactered as the distillery tries to be.
It leads with an aroma of deep, earthy, sweet juniper: bold, not overwhelming. A combination of orange, lemon and coriander follows through, while angelica, licorice and ginger soften the juniper and elevate the flavor. Deeply juniper, with a botanical soul.
Easy on its own and infinitely mixable, it shines in a Gin & Tonic, a Negroni or a Martini, or on the rocks with a splash of soda.
