El Ateo Reposado is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from the Los Altos region of Jalisco, rested in ex-bourbon American oak barrels for less than a year and bottled at 40% ABV.
It is produced at Plantaciones Tequilana (NOM 1635) by traditional methods: the agave is cooked in brick ovens, the juice is extracted with a tahona, fermented without the fibres and distilled twice. El Ateo, meaning the atheist, carries a bold, irreverent identity on its label.
Resting in American oak brings vanilla, caramel and toasted wood that complement the natural sweetness of highland agave, with cooked agave and light oak on the nose.
With its striking label, it makes a conversation-starting gift.
Sip it neat, over ice, or in a reposado margarita.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
A tahona is a large stone wheel, traditionally pulled by mules or oxen, that crushes cooked agave to release its sweet juice; it is slower than a mechanical mill but prized for the fuller agave flavour it gives.
The Los Altos highlands of Jalisco have red, iron-rich soil and cool nights, conditions that grow large agaves known for fruity, floral and sweet tequilas.
A reposado, meaning rested, is aged between two months and one year in oak, long enough to take on colour and gentle wood character while keeping the bright flavour of the agave.
