El Buho Espadín Distilled with Mango is a mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made from espadín agave and redistilled with ripe criollo mangos, bottled at 47% ABV.
Maestro mezcalero Octavio Jiménez Monterroza cooks the espadín for seven days in a stone oven, crushes it with a horse-drawn tahona and ferments it for eight days in pine vats with wild yeast. After two distillations, 600 kilograms of ripe criollo mangos are added for a third distillation, in the style of a pechuga but without any protein.
The result carries an intense aroma of ripe mango over the agave, with a finish of cooked agave and notes of green chilli.
Its striking owl label makes it a fun, flavourful gift for mezcal lovers and the curious alike.
Sip it from a copita, or use it to bring tropical fruit and smoke to a margarita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
