El Cristiano Extra Añejo is a limited-quantity tequila aged for three years in American white oak barrels and bottled at 40% ABV. It is made under NOM 1499.
El Cristiano crafts its tequilas in small batches, and the extra añejo is its most mature expression, with long ageing bringing depth and a dark amber colour with bright copper hues.
The nose brings caramel and nutmeg with prune, cinnamon and honey, along with vanilla, toasted oak and dried fruit. On the palate come white oak and sweet fruit notes of raisin and dates.
The tall bottle with its gold cross emblem makes it an elegant gift.
Sip it neat from a snifter.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
