El Gran Legado de Vida Añejo is an additive-free tequila made at the historic Tequila Cascahuín distillery, rested 18 months in a blend of American oak ex-bourbon barrels and French oak ex-Cognac casks, and bottled at 43% ABV.
Revered by tequila purists, it marries old-school valley distilling with refined wood curation, and its dual-barrel maturation draws on two rich traditions of oak aging.
The multi-barrel aging gives a beautifully layered flavour profile that keeps the bright character of lowlands agave, with warm vanilla, caramel and toasted oak around the natural sweetness of cooked agave and a velvety texture.
A favourite among additive-free tequila fans, it makes a fine gift.
Sip it neat, slowly, at room temperature.
Añejo tequila is aged between one and three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres, long enough to add colour, sweetness and spice while keeping the character of the agave, which makes it a natural sipping tequila.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
Additive-free tequila is made without the sweeteners, glycerine, caramel colour or oak extract that the regulations otherwise allow in small amounts, so everything in the glass comes from agave, water, yeast and wood.
