El Jolgorio Barril is an artisanal mezcal made from 100% Barril (Agave karwinskii) by maestro mezcalero Pablo Vásquez García in Agua del Espino, Oaxaca. The agaves were at least 13 years old, and the mezcal was distilled twice in copper pot stills and bottled at 48.6% ABV.
El Jolgorio, meaning the revelry, is named for the small-batch mezcals shared at traditional Zapotec village celebrations. Each release is made by an individual maestro mezcalero in Oaxaca and bottled in numbered editions, with labels illustrated by Oaxacan artists, so every bottle offers a window into a particular place, agave and maker.
Fresh, breezy aromas of jicama, pea shoots, blue flowers and sea air lead to a bold, vegetal palate of roasted parsnip, black pepper, grilled asparagus and pine resin, with hints of bread, caraway and bergamot and a smoky finish.
The illustrated label makes it a collectable gift for agave enthusiasts.
Sip it slowly from a copita.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
