El Mayor Añejo is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila designed for slow, contemplative sipping, aged in white oak barrels for 18 to 36 months and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
El Mayor, meaning the greatest, was born in 1998 when Luxco founder Paul Lux turned to one of Mexico's most reputable tequila-distilling families, the Gonzalez family, who have been making handcrafted tequila in Jalisco for more than 150 years. It is made at the DGL distillery just outside Arandas in the highlands of Jalisco, a prime location for superior agave, where Rodolfo Gonzalez's son Paul and daughter Graciela represent the fourth generation. The hand-selected agave is cooked in autoclaves, shredded and gently pressed to extract its full flavor.
Golden in color, it offers a caramel aroma with sweet fruit and light oak. A smooth entry leads to a soft, medium-to-full-bodied palate with caramel, grilled tropical fruit and brown spices, and the finish shows lightly sweet agave fruit.
Pair it with lamb or rabbit.
Añejo tequila is aged between one and three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres, long enough to add colour, sweetness and spice while keeping the character of the agave, which makes it a natural sipping tequila.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
