El Mayor Reposado is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila rested in white oak barrels for a minimum of nine months, giving it an elegantly structured, balanced taste and a remarkably smooth finish, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
El Mayor, meaning the greatest, was born in 1998 when Luxco founder Paul Lux turned to the Gonzalez family, who have been making handcrafted tequila in Jalisco for more than 150 years. It is made at the family's DGL distillery just outside Arandas, in the highlands of Jalisco, where Paul and Graciela Gonzalez represent the fourth generation.
The hand-harvested, mature estate-grown agave is cooked in autoclaves, shredded and gently pressed to extract its full flavor. The reposado then rests for at least nine months in white oak barrels, much longer than the two-month minimum for the category, which brings subtle golden hues and a rounded, balanced character.
Hints of sweet fruit and understated spice rise from the glass. A smooth, round entry leads to a dryish, medium body with perfumed fruity agave, vanilla, spice and caramel, and the finish is smooth and balanced with fruity, perfumed spice.
El Mayor Reposado is lovely sipped neat or over a single large cube, and it makes an excellent upgraded Margarita, a Paloma with fresh grapefruit, or a tequila Old Fashioned with agave syrup and orange bitters. The distillery recommends pairing it with tacos and grilled lobster, and it also suits carnitas, grilled shrimp, mole and smoky barbecue. Serve it at room temperature in a narrow-rimmed glass to concentrate the aromas of agave and oak.
