El Mayor Blanco is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from the Gonzalez family's Destiladora Gonzalez Lux in Arandas, Jalisco, made from estate-grown, hand-harvested mature agave and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
El Mayor, meaning the greatest, was born in 1998 when Luxco founder Paul Lux turned to one of Mexico's most reputable tequila-distilling families, the Gonzalez family, who have been making handcrafted tequila in Jalisco for more than 150 years. It is made at their distillery just outside Arandas in the highlands of Jalisco, where Paul and Graciela Gonzalez represent the fourth generation.
The estate-grown agave is hand-harvested at maturity, cooked in autoclaves and shredded with a mill, then gently pressed and distilled. The Blanco is bottled unaged to showcase the agave. It earned Gold Medals at the 2024 ASCOT Awards and SIP Awards.
The nose is clean and floral, with fresh agave, citrus blossom, tropical fruit, light vanilla and a spicy undertone. The body is crisp and light, with a hint of floral and pepper on the finish.
Sip it neat or on the rocks, or mix a crisp Margarita, a Paloma or a Ranch Water.
Blanco tequila is bottled unaged or rested for less than two months, so it shows the agave at its purest: bright, peppery and fresh. It is the classic choice for margaritas and palomas, and a good blanco is just as rewarding sipped neat.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
