El Mexicano Extra Añejo is a 100% Tequilana Weber agave tequila from Hacienda El Mexicano (NOM 1588) in Los Altos, the Highlands of Jalisco. Aged in American and French oak, it is bottled at 40% ABV in an amber bottle with an olive green cap and a bronze eagle on the label.
El Mexicano takes a classic approach: the agave is cooked in an autoclave, the juice extracted with a roller mill, fermented in stainless steel and double distilled in stainless pot stills. The tequila then rests in a mix of American and French oak barrels, and the agave remains clearly present in the finished spirit.
On the nose come butterscotch, tropical fruit, dried fruit, oak and butter, with the agave still shining through. The palate is rounded and not heavy with barrel, carrying a little warmth and a dry, spicy finish. It is rated around 87 to 90 on Tequila Matchmaker.
The eagle on the label is a proud emblem of Mexico, and the bottle's warm amber glass shows off the colour of the tequila. It is a fine sipping extra añejo and a handsome gift.
For lovers of Highland tequila, it offers long-aged richness with the agave still front and centre.
