Elijah Craig Straight Rye is an extra-aged Kentucky straight rye from Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV). This is the large 1.75 litre bottle.
Elijah Craig is credited as the first distiller to age his whiskey in charred oak barrels, earning his place in history as the Father of Bourbon. Elijah Craig Rye honours that innovative spirit as the first extra-aged Kentucky straight rye in the award-winning lineup. It is made much like Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, but the mash bill leads with rye: 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley, aged in new charred American oak.
The extra ageing brings caramel and vanilla from the oak alongside the pepper, dried herb and caraway of the rye grain, in a more integrated package than younger ryes. The nose offers baking spice, dark fruit, vanilla and toasted oak with hints of citrus, and the palate brings bold rye spice, caramel, black pepper, honey and subtle cocoa.
The big bottle is made for regular rye drinkers, home bars and cocktails.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
