Espanita Añejo is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from the Jalisco Highlands, double distilled in small alembic pot stills and aged up to 18 months in American oak casks that previously held bourbon, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Espanita starts with hand-selected agaves grown at high elevation in Jalisco's Highlands, famous for their sweet, fruity taste and aromatic floral and citrus notes. The agaves are baked for up to 72 hours in traditional stone ovens, crushed by roller mill, fermented five to seven days and double distilled in small batches in copper-lined alembic pot stills, keeping only the heart (el corazón) of the distillate. The añejo then ages up to eighteen months in small American oak casks previously used for bourbon.
The result is a luxuriously smooth, nuanced tequila rich in vanilla, toasted nuts and caramel that still keeps the charming, honeyed flavors of slowly roasted agave.
The vivid sun-and-moon label makes it a striking gift.
Añejo tequila is aged between one and three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres, long enough to add colour, sweetness and spice while keeping the character of the agave, which makes it a natural sipping tequila.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
