Exiliado Tobasiche Joven is a mezcal artesanal from Oaxaca made from wild-foraged Agave karwinskii aged 15 years and bottled at 47% ABV.
It is produced by mezcalero Artemio García in the community of San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca. Tobasiche is one of the slender, tall-growing karwinskii agaves, harvested by hand from the wild and distilled in copper pot stills.
In the glass it is clear, with rich earth tones, roasted agave, dry herbs and citrus peel, and a palate of gentle smoke, herbal notes and a subtle sweetness, leading to a smooth, satisfying finish.
Its bold X label makes it a striking gift for mezcal explorers.
Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
Mezcals from Agave karwinskii, the family that includes tobasiche, madrecuishe and cuishe, are prized for their dry, mineral and vegetal character. These agaves grow on a tall trunk rather than as a low rosette, and each plant yields relatively little sugar, which makes their mezcals rarer than those from cultivated espadín.
