Ferg & Harris Auchentoshan 15 Year Old is a single cask Lowland single malt, distilled on 31 October 2007 and bottled in February 2023, after a finish in a medium-charred new oak barrel. Bottled at cask strength without chill filtration or added colour, the release yielded just 272 bottles.
Auchentoshan, on the outskirts of Glasgow, is famous for triple distillation, which gives its spirit a light, delicate character. Ferg & Harris, the independent label founded by John Ferguson and Alex Harrison, paired that elegant spirit with the robust, spicy character of virgin oak, and this release was selected for The Whiskey Lab.
The new oak brings warm spice to the fore: cinnamon, orange peel, nutmeg and star anise, underpinned by praline and charred oak.
The bottle features Ferg & Harris' illustrated label with blue botanical artwork and comes in a matching box, a great find for collectors of independent bottlings.
Taste it neat first, then add a few drops of water to open the spice.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
