Fidencio Clásico is a 100% Espadín mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made by the Jiménez family and twice distilled in a wood-fired alembic still to 88 proof (44% ABV).
Fidencio launched in 2009 and has remained a strong presence thanks to the Jiménez family's dedication to quality over quantity. Espadín plants at least a decade old are harvested by hand, in tribute to Zapotec heritage under a new moon, then split by axe and roasted underground over embers of encino (black oak). Distilled twice in a traditional wood-fired alembic similar to those used in Cognac and only slightly diluted, it was awarded Double Gold, 99 points and named a Top Five Mezcal at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
It retains the traditional body, sharp grassy notes and long savory mid-palate of a classic Espadín, with a nicely mineral and smoky nose and touches of vanilla and lemon.
The classic label makes it a great gift for mezcal fans.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
