Fidencio Tepextate is a joven mezcal made from wild tepextate agave, which can take up to 30 years to mature, distilled in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca; this bottling is 47.8% ABV.

Fidencio is made by mezcalero Enrique Jiménez at Fábrica de Amigo del Mezcal (NOM-O15X) in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, often called the world capital of mezcal, and draws on four generations of family tradition and skill. Tepextate, which looks like a prehistoric plant, grows wild on steep, rocky hillsides, and its long life gives it an intense, green and spicy character prized by mezcal lovers.

It is a bold, complex mezcal with vivid green, vegetal and spicy notes over roasted agave.

A rare, slow-grown wild agave mezcal, it makes a fine gift for collectors.

Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts in earthen pits, which gives the spirit its characteristic smoke, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, often in small copper stills.

Wild agaves like tepextate are harvested from the hills rather than farmed, so each batch is small and its character reflects the land where the plants grew.

A joven mezcal is bottled unaged, letting the full flavour of the agave and the roast come through without the influence of oak.
