Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #2 is an English single malt from the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, matured mainly in first-fill bourbon casks and then given a secondary maturation in peated casks, bottled at 48% ABV.
Filey Bay is made with homegrown barley, grown and distilled from field to bottle on the Yorkshire coast; the name comes from the curve of the bay visible from the distillery window. The Peated Finish brings the west coast of Scotland to the east coast of Yorkshire, and Batch #2 won a World Whisky Masters award.
Light, fresh and coastal, it shows caramel, soft peat smoke and citrus: subtly smoky and full of coastal character.
Its bespoke bottle, with a hidden "Proudly Made of Yorkshire" underneath, makes it a charming gift.
Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
Whisky made in England has grown quickly in recent years, with distilleries like Spirit of Yorkshire growing their own barley and following it from field to bottle.
Peat is partly decomposed vegetation burned to dry malted barley; finishing in casks that held peated whisky gives a gentle wisp of smoke rather than the heavy smoke of a fully peated spirit.
First-fill bourbon casks give vanilla and caramel, a soft base for the peated finish.
Bottled at 48% ABV, it keeps more texture and flavour than a standard 40% whisky.
Its light, fresh style makes it an easy introduction to gently smoky whisky.
