Fortaleza Blanco is the unaged, additive-free tequila from La Fortaleza distillery in the Tequila Valley, produced by fifth-generation distiller Guillermo Erickson Sauza under NOM 1493 and bottled at 40% ABV. This 700ml bottle is the format made for international markets.
Fortaleza is made the traditional way, without industrial shortcuts: 100% Tequila Valley blue Weber agave is cooked in stone ovens, crushed with a tahona stone wheel and double distilled in copper pot stills, then bottled without any oak aging. The distillery, one of the oldest in Tequila, uses its tahona to crush the roasted agave, a process largely abandoned by industrial producers.
Because it is bottled directly from the copper stills and not chill filtered, Fortaleza Blanco keeps an incredibly rich, oily viscosity rarely seen in clear spirits, with bright cooked agave at its heart.
For many tequila lovers it is the benchmark blanco, and a gift that shows what traditional production tastes like.
Sip it neat, or use it in a margarita that lets the agave shine.
Blanco tequila is bottled unaged or rested for less than two months, so it shows the agave at its purest: bright, peppery and fresh. It is the classic choice for margaritas and palomas, and a good blanco is just as rewarding sipped neat.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
