Fortaleza Reposado is a 100% agave tequila made by fifth-generation tequilero Guillermo Erickson Sauza at Destilería La Fortaleza (NOM 1493) in the town of Tequila, rested in American oak and bottled at 40% ABV. This is the 700ml international bottle.
Fortaleza is a return to the Sauza family's roots and traditional methods: agave cooked in stone ovens, crushed with a tahona stone wheel, fermented naturally and distilled in small copper pot stills. Rather than relying on additives, it lets time in charred oak round out the spirit, and the length of ageing for each batch is stated on its bottle.
The aromas bring citrus, caramel, butter, cooked agave and sage, with chocolate and dried fruit. The palate offers cooked agave, citrus, vanilla, apple, earth and cinnamon, and the finish is long and rich, delicately spicy, with an oily texture.
The hand-blown bottle with its agave-shaped stopper makes it a classic gift for tequila lovers.
Sip it neat, or use it in an exceptional margarita.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
