Four Pillars Fresh Yuzu Gin is a bright, aromatic dry gin from Healesville, Victoria, made with locally grown fresh yuzu and Japanese-inspired botanicals and bottled at 83.6 proof (41.8% ABV).
Four Pillars was established in 2013 by three mates in Healesville, about an hour's drive from Melbourne, and builds every gin on a canvas of juniper with Australian native botanicals and an abundance of fresh produce. After three limited-edition yuzu trial runs, the distillery launched this honed and perfected Fresh Yuzu Gin in 2022 as the newest member of its core range, inspired by its adventures making gin with Japanese friends.
The yuzu comes from Mountain Yuzu, specialty growers of cool-climate citrus in Victoria's Ovens Valley. Learning from those Japanese collaborations, the team added fresh ginger, turmeric and sencha genmaicha, a Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice, for depth of flavor, all on a canvas of strong pine-needle juniper, with a little lemon myrtle adding a touch of lemon curd and Australian finger lime in support.
The nose is bright yuzu, with lemon, mandarin and grapefruit alongside lemongrass and pine. The fruit is vivid but the gin never disappears: bright citrus over a proper juniper canvas, with green tea and ginger adding depth. It has earned gold medals around the world.
A light and bright gin, it is best enjoyed in a Fresh Yuzu Highball with soda and a slice of citrus, and it makes an excellent Gin & Tonic or a citrus-forward Martini.
