Foursquare Penultimus is the thirtieth release, Mark XXX, in the award-winning Exceptional Cask Selection from the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados. A 15-year-old single blended rum bottled unfiltered at cask strength, 57% ABV, it contains no added sugar, colouring or flavouring.
As its Latin name suggests, Penultimus is the last but one bottling before the series concludes. It is also the first in the series to use Spanish Moscatel casks: one component aged the full 15 years in ex-bourbon casks, and the other spent ten years in ex-bourbon before a final five years in ex-Moscatel casks.
On the nose come molasses, toasted oak, dark honey and raisins with a wine-cask lift of grape skin and orange peel, alongside dark chocolate, black tea, Medjool dates, coconut and lemon. The palate is full-bodied, with burnt sugar, baking spice, fig, golden melon, pineapple, caramel and dark chocolate, and the finish is grippy and long, with a lemon-sherbet tang.
Foursquare's ECS releases are among the most collected rums in the world, and Penultimus is a must for anyone following the series to its end.
