Frank August Case Study: 06, Legacy Reserve, is a small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon, the sixth release in the brand's Case Study series. It blends six barrels of 8-, 9- and 10-year-old bourbons, two from each of three storied Kentucky distilleries, and is bottled at 109.24 proof. Just 1,282 bottles were released.
Frank August's Case Study programme explores how blending, barrels and finishing shape bourbon, with each release focused on a single idea. Legacy Reserve celebrates the depth of well-aged Kentucky bourbon from several great distilleries, and the brand's minimalist bottle lets the whiskey speak for itself.
The nose brings baking spice, toasted sugar and charred oak, with caramel and dried fruit. On the palate come vanilla bean, buttercream and nutmeg, supported by oak spice and honeyed grain, and the finish is long, with toasted orange peel, charred maple and caramelised sugar.
The elegant bottle makes it a superb gift for bourbon collectors.
Add a few drops of water to open the fruit.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
