G4 Reposado is a highland tequila from fourth-generation master distiller Felipe Camarena at El Pandillo distillery (NOM 1579) in Jesús María, Jalisco, aged about six months in used American whiskey barrels and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
It begins with 100% Blue Weber agave, eight to ten years old, slow-roasted in custom stone ovens and crushed by El Pandillo's mechanical tahona, affectionately named "Frankenstein". Fermentation uses proprietary natural yeasts passed down through the family and a 50/50 blend of spring water and collected rainwater, followed by distillation in small copper pot stills. The G4 name refers to the fourth generation of the Camarena family in tequila, and El Pandillo is one of the most respected highland distilleries in the additive-free movement.
The nose offers cooked agave, vanilla, light oak and citrus zest. The palate is creamy, with agave, honey, black pepper, dried herbs and caramel, smooth and silky, and the finish brings light spice, toasted wood and lingering green agave.
A benchmark highland reposado, it makes a fine gift for tequila lovers.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
