Glen Garioch Founder's Reserve is a non-chill-filtered Highland single malt Scotch whisky from one of Scotland's oldest operating distilleries, bottled at 96 proof (48% ABV).
Glen Garioch, pronounced "Glen Geery", was founded in 1797 by John and Alexander Manson in the town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, and this edition is a tribute to the founders and more than two centuries of craftsmanship. The distillery draws its water from an underground source known as the Silent Spring, a remarkably pure spring discovered after a drought in 1968 that can be neither seen nor heard without modern instruments.
The whisky gets its character from the marriage of bourbon and sherry casks, and it is never chill filtered: those so-called unrefined elements are embraced as part of the spirit. Warm amber in the glass, it offers sweet vanilla and subtle spice with green apple and grapefruit on the nose, then butter cream and vanilla leading to green apple skin and citrus, with an elegant, subtle finish.
It has earned 92 points from Wine Enthusiast and Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2017 and 2018, and makes a fine gift.
Bourbon casks give the whisky vanilla and soft fruit, while sherry casks add richness and spice; marrying the two creates a balanced, rounded single malt.
Aberdeenshire's Eastern Highlands produce malts known for a fuller body, and Oldmeldrum is a small market town north-west of Aberdeen.
