Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish is the oldest expression in the distillery's Elgin Heritage collection, matured for around 19 years in ex-bourbon casks before a final two years in Port casks. It is bottled at 46.3% ABV and non-chill filtered.
Glen Moray sits on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, in the heart of Speyside. For this release, Master Distiller Graham Coull chose casks that had held Port from Porto Cruz, giving the long-aged malt an extra layer of rich, red-fruit depth. It was first released in 2019.
On the nose come berry fruit with vanilla, caramel and gingerbread, along with blueberry muffins, candied ginger and a hint of rose petal. The palate leads with blackcurrant and liquorice, then caramel toffee and chilli chocolate, with a dessert-like richness reminiscent of sherry trifle. The finish brings dark chocolate and caramelised raisins.
The bottle is presented in a navy blue box with copper detailing. It is a superb gift for a 21st birthday, a milestone anniversary or a lover of fruit-rich Speyside whisky.
In the glass it shows a deep golden colour with a reddish tint from the Port casks.
