Glen Scotia Double Cask is a Campbeltown single malt matured in first-fill bourbon casks and finished for twelve months in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
It is a superb introduction to the Glen Scotia range for whisky explorers and a perfect demonstration that age is no indication of character. The expression is crafted to capture Campbeltown's maritime origins and the town's history of exotic casks arriving through its harbour: the bourbon barrels give a sweet foundation and creamy texture, and the PX finish adds rich, spicy fruit.
Initially it is all crème caramel, caramelised fruit sugars, toffee and fudge before apple and peach appear, with a charred bourbon note and a pleasing dusty dryness in time. The palate starts sweet and fat with good mid-palate weight, toffee, dark fruit and warming spice, and a gentle maritime character runs throughout.
Presented in its box, it makes a fine gift for malt lovers.
Campbeltown, on the Kintyre Peninsula, was once called the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries; today only a handful remain, and Glen Scotia is one of them.
Pedro Ximénez is the richest, sweetest style of sherry, and a finish in its casks adds dried fruit, raisin and spice to a whisky.
First-fill bourbon casks have held bourbon only once before, so they give plenty of vanilla and creamy sweetness.
