Glenmorangie Signet is one of the most distinctive single malts in Scotland, a rich, mocha-toned whisky created by Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation. It blends some of Glenmorangie's oldest stocks, including whiskies well over 30 years old, with single malt made from heavily roasted chocolate malt barley. It is bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered.
The idea for Signet came to Dr Bill over a cup of his favourite Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, when his mind filled with spiralling mocha flavours he could not forget. To capture them, he used chocolate malt, barley roasted much like coffee beans, a technique no other Glenmorangie uses, and married it with rare old whiskies from the distillery's warehouses. Because some of those whiskies are kept secret, Signet carries no age statement.
On the nose come dark chocolate, espresso and orange, with sherry, leather and hints of eucalyptus and mint. The palate is rich and peppery, with mocha, praline, hazelnut, treacle and candied orange peel, and the finish is long, with cocoa and cream. WhiskyCast scored it 94 points.
The heavy, dark bottle is wrapped with an ornate gold seal, and it comes in a black presentation box. It is a superb gift for a coffee and chocolate lover and a cornerstone for any Highland collection.
