Glenmorangie The Nectar is a 16-year-old Highland single malt matured in bourbon casks and sweet white wine casks, bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV). It succeeds the much-loved Nectar d'Or, aged longer and finished in an enhanced combination of dessert wine casks.
Inspired by his memory of entering a French pastry shop, Dr Bill Lumsden first brought a whisky of dessert-like complexity to life in The Nectar d'Or. For The Nectar, silky Glenmorangie aged 14 years in bourbon casks was selected for depth and creaminess, then finished for two more years in a new combination of sweet white wine casks. Sauternes and Monbazillac casks from France bring sumptuous notes of pastry, brioche, meringue and baked apples; Moscatel casks from Spain offer sweet, syrupy dessert notes; and Tokaji casks from Hungary add white chocolate, almond and honeycomb.
The aroma is rich and heady, almost decadent. On the palate come rich, sweet flavours of vanilla crème anglaise, baked apricots, warm raisin bread and roasting chestnuts, with spices, particularly nutmeg and star anise. An oaky backbone lasts throughout, always balanced by sweet, fruity and spicy notes, and the finish is long and lingering, with lemon rind, baking bread and a touch of honeycomb.
