Golden Moon Colorado Mugishōchū is a barley shochu made in Golden, Colorado, from 100% two-row barley, koji and yeast, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
It was developed by master distiller Stephen Gould, who fell in love with shochu while living in Japan years ago. The barley is grown in Colorado and the surrounding states and malted near the distillery in Golden, and it is fermented with organic brown rice koji and distilled using traditional methods of production. The water is Rocky Mountain water from the Clear Creek and Montezuma watersheds, making it a unique combination of Japanese tradition and Colorado ingredients. The Mugishochu earned a gold medal at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Barley shochu is traditionally enjoyed on the rocks, mixed with cold water (mizuwari) or lengthened with hot water (oyuwari), which makes it a versatile companion at the table.
The red-and-white label with its Japanese characters makes it a distinctive gift.
