Gracias a Dios Espadín Joven is an unaged mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made from 100% cultivated Espadín agave and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
The brand was born after its founders spent two years touring Mexico in search of mezcal and met mezcalero Oscar Hernández, who learned to distill from his mother; they built the brand with him as an equal partner. The Espadín uses eight-year-old cultivated agave, roasted in underground pits, crushed, naturally fermented and distilled twice in copper.
A slight smokiness and spice open the glass, with apple, pear, cinnamon and fall spices on the aroma. The palate turns fruity, with earthy agave, citrus and wood smoke and a mild astringency, ending dry and spiced.
A well-balanced mezcal for newcomers and seasoned fans alike.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
