Gran Centenario Leyenda is a rare extra añejo tequila made from 100% blue agave in the highlands of Jalisco and aged in French Limousin oak barrels. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
Leyenda is finished using Gran Centenario's Selección Suave process, which marries the spirit with tequila reserves aged up to fifteen years for added richness and complexity. It is made at La Perseverancia distillery in Los Altos de Jalisco, one of the oldest names in tequila.
Leyenda offers aromatic notes of apple, pear, quince and raisins. The complex flavour holds subtle, sweet tones of wood with hints of maple, eucalyptus, clove and thyme, along with roasted almonds, dark chocolate, dried apricot and walnut.
Presented in a tall black gift box with an angel emblem, it is an elegant gift for tequila collectors.
Sip it neat from a snifter, as you would a fine cognac.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
