Grander Rye Whiskey Barrel Finished Rum is aged Panamanian rum finished in ex-rye whiskey barrels, the first release in Grander's Barrel Series, bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
Grander was launched in 2015 by Dan DeHart, a Kentucky native living in Florida, who partnered with the Las Cabras distillery in the Herrera district of Panama, where rum is made in the Cuban style and aged on site. Each batch starts with 12-year-old rum aged in ex-bourbon barrels, which is then finished in barrels that held rye whiskey, with the batch number printed on the front label. The founder chose barrels from a barely legal 51% rye whiskey, which he felt would play well with the aged rum.
Finishing rum in rye barrels is uncommon, and the result is a remarkable combination of spice and subtle sweetness: dense chocolate, vanilla and baking spice with a slightly funky molasses edge, then big, peppery rye that slowly fades into brown butter. It scored 90 points at the 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
