Hamilton West Indies 1670 Blend is a rum from Ed Hamilton's Ministry of Rum Collection, blending funky Jamaican pot still rum from Worthy Park with Demerara rum from Diamond Distillery in Guyana, bottled at 84 proof (42% ABV) with no added sugar.
Ed Hamilton, known as the Minister of Rum, bottles his rums under the Ministry of Rum Collection, selecting rums from great Caribbean distilleries and bottling them without additives. The 1670 takes its name from a shared date of heritage: Worthy Park Estate, near the geographic center of Jamaica, traces its founding to 1670.
The blend pairs Worthy Park's funky Jamaican character with the earthy, smoky depth of Demerara rum from Diamond Distillery. Like the rest of the Hamilton range, it contains no additives and no added sugar or sweeteners, and it is bottled without filtration. The Ministry of Rum label, with its blue band, names the blend and the strength.
Ripe banana and tropical esters from the Jamaican component lead the nose, layered with dark fruit, smoky wood and molasses from the Demerara side, with a hint of milk chocolate on the palate.
It is a superb Daiquiri rum: shake it with fresh lime and simple syrup. It also shines in a Mai Tai, a rum Old Fashioned or a Jungle Bird.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
